To Think About
Jealousy is an interesting topic. On the one hand, jealousy is condemned in the Scriptures: Rom. 13:13 "Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy." 1Cor. 3:3 "for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men?" Yet, on the other hand, we find: Ex. 34:14 "— for you shall not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God —" and Num. 25:11 “ Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned away My wrath from the sons of Israel in that he was jealous with My jealousy among them, so that I did not destroy the sons of Israel in My jealousy"; or 2 Cor. 11:2 "For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin." So, sometimes it seems that jealousy is sinful and sometimes it is godly. What's the difference?
The difference is found in the object. Being jealous, envying, desiring what others have, what they have achieved, gets on God's wrong side real quick. This kind of jealousy is a slap in the Almighty's face. Being consumed with this kind of jealousy is saying that we are discontented, disappointed, even angry with our "lot" in life. We are, in effect, telling God He has done a bad job. We have gotten a raw deal. The jealousy that is godly, the kind that God exhibits, is the kind that places value in love and in the beloved. God is jealous for our love. He wants us to only love Him . . . no dissolution. Israel was judged for committing spiritual adultery, "joining" themselves to other gods. God wants us for Himself. When we are jealous with His kind of jealous then we will want ourselves (and others) to be joined only to Him. Do I have the same kind of jealousy as God? Just think about it . . . .
